Public invited to Pine Island Elementary’s Veterans Day program

November 7, 2019
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor

Pine Island is a place that honors its culture, traditions, and most importantly, its people. This is no truer than on Veterans Day, when our citizens pay respect to the men and women who have made our island lifestyle possible by protecting our freedom. Our youngest residents know that a price is paid for freedom and every year they try to repay that sacrifice in a small way by holding a program dedicated to those who have served and continue to serve. Last year, over a hundred veterans came to hear our local youngsters sing patriotic songs and read letters and poems of gratitude.

Pine Island Elementary students appreciate our veterans and their respect for them is shown as soon as our respected visitors enter the campus. Each year, a few fifth grade students are chosen to represent Pine Island Elementary as student ambassadors. These students welcome the veterans, escort them to and from pavilion where the ceremony is held and then dine with the veterans in the cafeteria.

We invite our community and all veterans to join us for this special time of recognition on Friday, Nov. 8, at 10:30 a.m. Coffee will be served in the Media Center prior to the event for those that come early. Outback Steakhouse will be providing a free catered lunch for all veterans at the school immediately following the program.

We are excited to continue this Pine Island Elementary tradition to honor our local veterans. If you have any questions please call Monica Renz at 239-283-0505.
