Free food distribution event Aug. 9 in Cape

July 31, 2019
Pine Island Eagle

The public is invited to attend a free food distribution event, while children 18 and younger have the opportunity to receive free dental care, next Friday in the parking lot next to the SWFL Military Museum & Library.

The event, which is sponsored by Dr. Carol Rae Culliton and the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, is a collaborative effort between Midwest Food Bank and the Cape Coral Caring Center. The food distribution event will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9. The SWFL Military Museum is located at 4820 Leonard St., in South Cape.

"From the Midwest Food Banks perspective a big thank you to the Gunterberg Foundation for making this possible in Cape Coral. We are looking forward to supporting the Cape Coral community with good food," Midwest Food Bank Florida Division Executive Director Karl Steidinger said.

He said this is the first time in a while that the food bank is doing a free food distribution.

"We are trying to revitalize somewhat of an old program. We have it scheduled for three months in a row in Cape Coral," he said, thanks to the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation supporting the cause.

Steidinger said there will be free food available for anyone in need.

"We try to have a good assortment of food," he said.

Some of the options might include rice and bean meals, cereal, protein drinks and frozen sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches.

Cape Coral Caring Center Executive Director Julie Ferguson said Dr. Carol Rae Culliton and the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation have done many free distribution food events for the Cape Coral Caring Center over the years.

"We are very grateful for the Gunterberg Foundation for their willingness to underwrite this event and help through the Midwest Food Bank with getting the food. We are hoping to help a lot of families that need food," Ferguson said. "We are distributing to the clients and inviting everyone in the community that needs some food. Everyone is welcome. Come out and get some food. Everyone will be treated with kindness. It will be a wonderful evening."

The Aug. 9 event will also feature the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, which will provide free dental work for children 18 years old and younger.

Ferguson said children have to be preregistered to utilize the services.

"We have nine children signed up. Twenty children have to be pre-signed up," she said for the service to be offered. "If there are children that can use this, this will be an opportunity for them to come out and get seen by a dentist."

Those interested have to sign up by Thursday, Aug. 1 by contacting the Cape Coral Caring Center at 239-945-1927 between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday.
