Pine Island maritime author Robert Macomber recently donated his latest book, "Honoring the Enemy," to the new "Little Free Lending Library" at Pine Island Elementary School.

"In 2017 my wife Nancy and I became aware of these lending libraries," Macomber said. "It was interesting when we found one right down the street from where we live and we decided to celebrate this. So from July 4th, 2017, to July 4th, 2018, wherever I was in the country we would get on the computer and locate the nearest lending library, take a picture and post it on Facebook to get people engaged. It really took off with hundreds of views."

The idea of creating "Little Free Lending Libraries" originated with Todd H. Bol, who built and placed the first free lending library in Hudson, Wisconsin, in 2009.

According to the website www.littlefreelibrary.org, there are more than 80,000 lending libraries in 90 countries. The website maintains a registry of "Little Free Lending Libraries" around the world and shows two in Bokeelia and two in St. James City.

"I do a lot of appearances at libraries all over the country because I believe literacy is a cornerstone of democracy," Macomber said. "If you don't have a literate electorate, then they can't make informed decisions on who they want to be their government employees. I believe in fostering literacy and giving my books is about giving back."

The lending library is located at the front entrance to Pine Island Elementary School, at 5360 Ridgewood Dr, Bokeelia, FL 33922, off Pine Island Road.
