Playhouse stages classic

Over the last two weekends, the Pine Island Playhouse performed "Winnie the POOH." The audience was introduced to all of the well loved characters: Christopher Robin, Kanga, Roo, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and Owl, and, of course, the Bear of Very Little Brain himself, Pooh. The play takes place in Hundred Acre Wood and was narrated by Neil Kerr.

The story centers around Pooh's (Tonya Player) hunger for honey in a bee-tree. After climbing the tree didn't work Pooh rolls himself in mud and attempts to float to the top of the honey tree in Christopher Robin's balloon.

Pooh's search leads him to Piglet (Lillie Powell) and then to Rabbit (Ila Valcarcel). Along the way Pooh, humming tunes and stopping frequently to "eat a little something," finds himself involved in all kinds of adventures with the assistance of his friends Piglet and Rabbit.

When Piglet gets roped into Kanga's household and Kanga starts bathing him (with soap!) and forcing down spoonfuls of Strengthening Medicine, Pooh wants to fly to the rescue, but he's had so many snacks he gets stuck in the door.

The original story was written by A.A. Milne, an English novelist who also wrote poems and plays but became famous for "Winnie the Pooh" published in 1926. Milne's wit and special understanding of young people have made this one of the most successful plays.

This is another fine play by Pine Island Playhouse. Nichole Pichon, who studied theater education and design and technology, and husband, Paul Pichon, have presented a wide range of plays since their first in May 2013, including "Little Women," "A Christmas Carol," "The Miracle Worker," "Robin Hood," "Frankenstein," "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

The "Winnie the POOH" production was sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Post #136 and supported by C.W. Fudge, Pine Island Pizza, Cosas FMB, El Pollo Rico, Team Shevlin Century 21 Sunbelt Realty, Monroe Canal Marina, Lilly's Island Deli, Ballroom Dance, Saltwater Smokehouse, and Olde Fish House Marina.
