Pine Island Elks award five scholarships

The Pine Island Elks Lodge #2781 awarded five scholarships last week. The Elks' scholarships are available to any high school senior.

Each of the five scholarships were for $2,000 and they may be used for tuition, books or other acceptable facets of education at either a certification or licensing program or towards a college degree. Each scholarship is paid to the student's I.D. account at their next school.

The Pine Island Elks scholarship winners are, from let, Ruddy Ditch, Kaylin Hill, Hannah Bryan and Hannah Holloway. One other winner, Mia Nelson, was absent. All five are members of the graduating Class of 2019 at local high schools.

ED FRANKS

Hannah Holloway lives in St. James City and will graduate Mariner High School. She will be attending Georgia Southwestern State University to pursue a degree in education.

Hannah Bryan is a Bokeelia resident and will graduate from Mariner High School. She will attend University of Florida. Her course of study will be family, youth and community sciences.

Mia Nelson lives in St. James City and will graduate from Cape Coral High School. She will attend Connecticut College to study behavioral neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and a pre-law track.

Kaylin Hill is a St. James City resident and will graduate from North Fort Myers High School. She will attend University of Central Florida. She is seeking a degree in biomedical sciences.

Ruddy Ditch lives in Bokeelia and will graduate from North Fort Myers High School. He will be attending University of Florida to pursue a degree in environmental science.

"I know here on Pine Island there are any number of charitable organizations that do fine work for seniors and my favorite thing is scholarships," presenter Ross Stornello said. "We need to help our young people receive a good solid education they'll become the leaders of tomorrow."
