Mel Meo displays her latest Matlacha paintings

By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

For the last four Fridays, local artist Mel Meo has been displaying her newest series of paintings of the colorful sites of Matlacha.

Barnhill Seafood, Elena's and Blue Dog Restaurant are among the dozen or more Meo has painted so far. There is even an arial view of Matlacha that she painted from memory.

"This is just a meet and greet to get out and meet people," said Meo, who was just named Best Local Artist in the Eagles' 2019 "Best of" competition. "There has been a lot of interest in this series and if anyone is interested, I can paint a scene that they like. I am making these postcard size, too, if any local business wants to sell them I have a wholesale price."

Meo is originally from the Indianapolis area. Her grandfather settled on Sanibel Island.

"When my mother came here, she was drawn to the Calusa mounds of Pineland," Meo said. "My parents purchased a house there in 1970 and that's where I grew up."

Meo followed her brother David Meo into art and because there was nothing to do in Pineland, she started painting.

"I've never had a lesson and I'm still learning by trial and error," Meo said. "The driving force for me is the desire to always create. Whether it's painting, sewing or writing, I wake up with that desire every morning."

This series is everything and anything in Matlacha, she said. Painting sizes begin as 5-inch x 7-inch postcard size but they can be any size.
