Byron Joseph Velie Jr

April 24, 2019
Pine Island Eagle

Please join us in celebrating Byron "Joe" Velie's life. A long-time resident of Pine Island, Barefoot Joe, as many of you knew him, moved to the area in the mid-1970's. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on September 4, 1927, grew up there, and later went on to become a commercial fisherman, sign painter, and entrepreneur. After serving in the United States Navy in the late 1940's, he moved to St. Petersburg where he raised a family. His final days were spent in the 1901 Randell home, close to his friends, looking over the waters he loved and used to fish in. He passed away at Hope Hospice of Cape Coral on April 20, 2019. Joe loved WC Fields quotes, so you can imagine him saying, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull!"

He is survived by his son Robert and daughters Dawn and Michelle. Grandchildren; Michael, Jeremy, Kara, Daniel, James, Jessica, Justin, Travis, Sam and Ben and 13 great- grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations in Joe's name be made to Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, in thanks for their kindness and generosity.
