Republican Congressman Francis Rooney was victorious Tuesday, securing his seat in District 19, as he defeated Democratic nominee David Holden.

"Kathleen and I are humbled by all who worked so hard in support of our campaign," he said in a prepared statement. "We are especially thankful to all that entrusted us with their votes. To those that chose a different candidate, I will do my best to earn your trust and support over these next two years. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress we've already made; in the fight to clean our water and eliminate harmful discharges into the Caloosahatchee, to reduce the burden of government that affects each of our lives and stifles economic growth, to secure our borders, to make prescription drugs more affordable for our seniors, and to enact term limits for career politicians."

Rooney secured 154,945 and 56,376 votes in Lee and Collier counties respectively, more than 60 percent in each location.

Holden secured 100,047 and 27,905 votes in the two counties, not nearly having the numbers to give Rooney a run for his seat.

Rooney won the election in 2016 with 65.9 percent of the vote.

Congressional District 19 spans from north Cape Coral and Boca Grande, down to Marco Island and has nearly 800,000 residents.
