We must do better

October 10, 2018

To the editor:

The American people have traded off too much for a promise of renewed Greatness. Whereas many are correct to say that political prevaricating is has a long history, it is only recently that we have allowed it to be acceptable, and even cheered it on.

We have put into power policymakers who make a farce out of facts, lie openly, use foul language, spin conspiracy theories, and trample on our Constitution. The Supreme Court was designed to be a bipartisan, impartial, and co-equal branch of government. Although the Constitution does require any specific qualifications for Supreme Court justices, the American Bar Association has a " Model Code of Judicial Conduct": A judge shall uphold and promote the independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary, and shall avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety. A judge shall perform the duties of judicial office impartially, competently, and diligently.

This latest battle for partisan control of the Supreme Court, riddled with lies, insults, blatant partisanship, and open hostility violates the spirit and letter of both the Constitution and the ABA Model Code.

We must do better or lose our Democracy.
