Beacon of HOPE Wellness Committee: Be prepared for the next hurricane

July 11, 2018
By Nancy Buthman , Pine Island Eagle

We tend to become complacent when we are not faced with a hurricane for many years. It's been 14 years since Charley. Then along comes Irma and it makes us realize again how serious hurricanes can be.

Hurricane season started June 1. It is predicted that it will be a "slightly above average" season. We don't know exactly what this means, but it is critical that we all be prepared.

First of all, it is important to have a plan that is known by your family and friends. Where will you go when you have to evacuate? How will you and the rest of your family get there?

Have a place to meet if you get separated. Put together a kit including flashlight, first aid supplies, water, non-perishable foods, Important documents, medicines. Consider any dietary and medical needs. Do you have enough medicine to get you through the hurricane and a week or 2 after if necessary? If you have special needs, sign up for the Special Needs shelter.

Before you evacuate, close all the doors and windows. Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the highest point and fill the freezer as full as possible.

If you need help in developing your plan, go to for many suggestions.

Remember there are no shelters on Pine Island. If an evacuation order is given, you have to get off the Island.

After the hurricane

There are places you can go to for help (food, shelter, whatever) after you return to the Island.

Never use a grill or a generator inside. They must be completely outside so fumes cannot get in the house.

Be cautious of those who come to the door to repair things. Check them out.

If you have emotional problems after the storm, Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies) was formed in January to help people with these type problems in Lee and Collier Counties. Call 239-260-7302.
