Island hairdresser continues to donate Locks of Love

July 11, 2018
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

Suzanne Finn has been a hairdresser for 35 years and involved with Locks of Love for more than 20 years.

"This is something I've been passionate about for many years," said Finn, who owns Tropical Hair Gallery. "I became involved with Locks of Love years ago when a fellow hairdresser's daughter came down with cancer. We did a fundraiser for this organization and I've been involved ever since."

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children.

"Any child under the age of 21 and suffering from any long-term medical hair loss can be helped by Locks of Love," Finn said. "People can either make a hair donation or a financial contribution."

Tropical Hair Gallery is offering free hair cuts for a donation of 10 inches or more of hair for the charity.

Locks of Love has the following requirements:

n Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.

n Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.

n Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches, and may be divided into multiple ponytails.

n Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.

n 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.

n Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process.

n Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable because it has not been cut while bundled in a ponytail or braid.

n Hair that is shaved off and not in a pony tail or braid is not usable. You may divide your hair into multiple ponytails, and cut each one off before continuing to shave.

n Locks of Love cannot accept dreadlocks, wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children's hairpieces.

"Their mission is to return a sense of self to children suffering from hair loss by donated ponytails to financially disadvantaged children free of charge," Finn said

"I've been coming to Suzi for at least 10 years now," veteran Dick Thomas said. "Suzi offers discount haircuts to veterans and this really helps the kids. It's a great cause to be a part of."

Tropical Hair Gallery is located at the Island Center in the Subway Plaza and is open for appointments and walk-in customers, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
