‘Mr. Fit’ providing personal training at Wellness Center

Alex Grauso, aka "Mr. Fit," a body builder and Mr. Connecticut in 2000, is currently personally training Pine Island / Matlacha residents at the Wellness Center in Matlacha.

"It's never too late to look great!" Grauso said. "Most of my clients are seniors and any senior who would like to lose weight, have more energy and make some positive health changes should call me."

Twenty-seven years ago, Grauso was a self described couch potato when after 20 years of marriage he was served with divorce papers.

"That changed my life," Grauso said. "Instead of going out drinking, my nephew introduced me to the gym and it just changed everything. When I started going to the gym I was in my 40s, I was very out of shape and my body fat was really high."

Grauso, a locksmith at the time, started a gym in Monroe, Connecticut, and made it a mission to learn as much about his body, nutrition and exercise as he could. He began eating a better diet and exercised seven days a week. He also became a certified personal trainer.

"I entered my first body building contest when I was 45," Grauso said. "Then in 2000, I won the Mr. Connecticut body building contest and in between I won a lot of trophies for body building.

"My clients come to me in all ages and all abilities," Grauso said. "Some are cancer patients, some have diabetes and some have hip replacements. You have to adapt the training for each client specifically.

"When I opened the gym, I had a woman come to me who had spent years bedridden and severely debilitated with numerous illnesses," Grauso said. "She had had several surgeries and because of her health problems was missing out on life. The local newspaper told her story about how much healthy eating and exercise changed her life."

Grauso's approach is lighthearted but he expects his clients to make improvement. He's also serious about showing his clients results. He makes and keeps color-coded charts measuring his clients' size, weight and the number of reps they do. Over time they see the results that keeps them motivated.

"I believe in fundamentals," Grauso said. "First you work on form and range of motion and then begin building strength. You have to crawl before you walk.

"The first thing my clients notice is they have more energy," Grauso said. "Then, by taking measurements, they see results in inches and pounds. That gives them the motivation to continue."

Grauso doesn't believe in 30-minute sessions.

"I offer one-hour sessions because you can't get significant improvement from 30 minutes," Grauso said. "At 71 years old, I just want to help people feel better."

Grauso offers personal training, nutritional counseling, weight training, cardio and fitness classes.
