In December 2016 the Cape Coral City Council voted to annex 5 lots on Matlacha Island to the city. Since the annexation, the islands' civic associations have been exploring the possibility of incorporating Pine Island and Matlacha. During the month of April, the Pine Island Eagle conducted both an informal poll -- both online and in the print editions of newspaper - to gather information of how many island residents (voters and non-voters) support incorporation and how many oppose incorporation.

In the Pine Island Eagle online poll, as of Friday, April 27, 271 people responded; 233 (86 percent) said they opposed incorporation, while 24 (9 percent) supported incorporation. Thirteen (5 percent) said they are undecided; and 1 (0 percent) indicated "Other."

During the month of April (the deadline April 30), 203 total ballots were turned in to the Eagle office via U.S. Postal Service and in person.
