LCSO: Deputy stabbed by Bokeelia resident released from local hospital

A Lee County deputy shot a man on Pine Island Thursday after the deputy was stabbed while answering a public assistance call in Bokeelia.

The deputy, who was not named, was attacked in the 16000 block of Aura Lane by a man wielding a knife, officials said.

The resident who was shot was later identified as Rickey Beaty, 59.

The deputy's injuries were described as "non-life-threatening," and he was treated and released from the hospital

The Sheriff's Office said Beaty was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. His condition was not known.

"At approximately 1:33 p.m. today our deputy dispatched to 16129 Aura Lane regarding a public assistance call," Undersheriff Carmine Marceno of the Lee County Sheriff Office said at a press conference on Pine Island Friday. "Upon our arrival our deputy spoke with a male suspect. Shortly after speaking to that suspect he began to attack our deputy with a knife subsequently stabbing our deputy. Our deputy, in fear for his life and safety, discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. Our deputy has non-life threatening injuries; he was transported to a local hospital. The suspect was flighted to a local hospital with unknown injuries."

The agency's Major Crime Unit has assumed the investigation.

No additional details were released Friday by the department.

"Because this is an open, active investigation I can't answer any questions," Marceno said Friday afternoon.
