At the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island meeting last week, Pine Island Elementary Principal Steve Hook presented a check for $256 to the Kiwanis.

The two Pine Island Elementary 4th grade teachers, Summer Dooley and Monica Renz, decided to turn Valentine's Day into a fundraiser. Students made paper hearts with a message to their friends and in the process raised $256 for the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island.

"I am blessed every day to work with a great staff and students of the island," Hook said. "We believe that kind, caring and loving is as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. These two teachers, Mrs. Monica Renz and Mrs. Summer Dooley, embody that in their classes every day."

"Summer and I believe that our jobs go way beyond teaching reading and math," Renz said. "We want to teach compassion, we want to teach empathy, and what it means to care about the people around you... Kiwanis does so much for the island and our kids and our school with Junior Olympics and scholarships. We are truly honored to be here and in the spirit of giving back we have a check for $256."

In additional business Nichole and Paul Pichon became members of the Pine Island Kiwanis.
