Last Friday, the Saltwater Smokehouse presented a check for $750 to the Beacon of HOPE. The money was raised from the first annual "Food for Thought" fundraiser held at the restaurant.

"This money will be used for our GED people," Beacon executive director Betsy Haesemeyer said. "I had hoped to raise enough for one student but this was so successful we collected a total of $2,150. That's enough for more than three students. The board and I are so grateful to Mike and Andrew. This is a huge help to us."

Owners Andrew Hamilton and Mike Flinn and the staff at Saltwater Smokehouse served their barbecue and seafood all day while the Beacon board, staff and GED students helped.

"Saltwater Smokehouse and the Beacon of HOPE know that education is the key to making a difference in someone's life," Flinn said. "We invited the residents of Pine Island to share the day with us while we raised this money."

"It was a wonderful day and all the board of directors chipped in and were a huge help," Beacon president Jane Bennington said. "A GED opens up so many new possibilities for people. They become eligible for better jobs and better futures."
