Beacon of HOPE Wellness Committee: So you have the flu

February 7, 2018

Here are some suggestions from WebMD that may help if you have the flu.

1. Drink up

The flu can leave you dehydrated particularly if diarrhea is one of your symptoms. Water is the best fluid to drink but fruit juices or Gatorade (to replace electrolytes) is also OK.

2. Sip some soup

It adds fluid, is nourishing and tastes good. (There is controversy as to whether or not chicken soup is therapeutic. I tried some the other day and it worked wonders).

3. Be a couch potato

Yes, rest is another way of assisting your body to fight infections. It is also important to get enough sleep.

4. Humidity

Breathing in moist air helps you ease nasal congestion. Spend some time in the shower or use a humidifier. (Clean often to insure it is free from mold and mildew).

5. Make a tent

Boil a pot of water and remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. Be careful not to burn yourself when you place a towel over your head and breathe in for about 30 seconds. You might want to put a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus in the water.

6. Be a sucker

Sucking on hard candy or throat lozenges might help to ease a sore throat. (This is controversial).

7. Try a warm compress

Place on your forehead and nose. Or try a cool compress if you have a fever.

8. Swish and spit

Gargling with salt water can help to break up thick mucus in the back of your throat. Especially helpful when you have been lying down for a while. (It tastes awful).

9. Try a saline nasal spray

10. Line up a caregiver

Receiving some TLC and having someone around to bring you drinks is a comfort. If a friend offers to stop by, take them up on it.
