Last Monday night, at the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce dinner, the Al Mills Award was given to Pine Island artist Mel Meo.

The Al Mills Award is presented to one individual or organization each year to recognize the dedication and commitment to island residents and the business community.

Personal friend and Stonegate Bank manager Elsie Stearns presented the award to Meo.

"She is a gift to the island and her native background shines through in everything she does," Stearns said. "Mel has touched us all in some special way. Our island is more beautiful through her artwork. She is kind, caring, loved and admired by so many. We are blessed to have her as a Pine Islander volunteering and supporting all of our causes."

Meo looked surprised and wondered why so many family members were present.

"I'm so surprised I thought with so many family members here, it was my birthday," Meo said. "This is so awesome and an amazing honor. I can't thank you all enough - thank you very much."

The chamber elected the following members to its Board of Directors:

- Cynthia Welch - Bokeelia Island Seaport & Bokeelia Fishing Pier

- Larry Solinger - Matlacha Menagerie

- Melissa Koferl - Wells Fargo Bank

- Molly Brown - Mangrove Paddling Company

- Monique Grindley - Wells Fargo

The Lee County Sheriff's Department Deputy of the Year award was presented by Capt. Matt Herterick to Sgt. Creghan.
