‘Who’d have thunk?’

January 24, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

An era comes to a soft close this month for the Matlacha Hookers. Our founder and First Madam, Nancy Goodwin, is moving north to West, By God, Virginia for her next adventure. Nancy started the Matlacha Hookers in 1999 and has been an active an integral member and participant ever since.

Nancy's vision and goal for the Hookers was to make a positive difference in our community. This has been realized in many ways over the years. The non-profit organization that Nancy assembled and lead has risen to the occasion to help where help is best needed. To date, the Hookers proudly boast of over 300 members, full time residents, Snowbirds and some that are just passing through our slice of Paradise and join while attending a local event such as P.I. Elementary Fishing tournament and Derby, Mango Mania or the Pine island Mullet Toss.

On Sunday, Nancy's ex-Madams and many Hookers and friends came to wish her well (no Good Byes only see you laters) starting at Olde Fish House, on to a dock party, and ending at Miceli's. As always, Nancy graciously accepted the many sentiments and Hooker stories with smiles and tears. The Hooker sisters will all miss her physical presence at meetings and events, but her spirit will continue to carry us through. Her strength, vision, support and encouragement have touched so many. She is leaving Pine Island a better place because of her involvement. To repeat Madam Nancy's first Eagle quote, "Who'd have thunk" one person's vision could make such a difference. But it has and her legacy will continue.

Best wishes to Nancy and Dane. We will strive to continue your vision and make you Pine Island proud!

Lorie Tidwell

Former Madam
