37th annual Pine Island Junior Olympics

January 24, 2018
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Despite a rainout and subsequent rescheduling, the 37th annual Pine Island Junior Olympics attracted a good crowd of contenders Saturday.

The field and bleachers were teeming with young athletes and parents attending the event organized by Lee County Parks and Recreation and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island .

"Unfortunately we had to reschedule because of rain but even, so I'm very excited with the kid turnout and the crowd turnout and today we have a star athlete, Shelly Gautier, para-cyclist medal winner in the Paralympic Games who will be presenting the awards to the children today," organizer Mike Shevlin said.

Gautier is a Canadian who trains on Pine Island during the winter months. She recently purchased a home on the island and can been seen on the bike path between St. James City and Bokeelia. Gautier uses a three-wheeled cycle.

Shevlin provided a little history of the event heading into its fourth decade.

"A gentleman named Rick Crotty's and I thought of starting a Junior Olympics 37 years ago," he said. "Children from kindergarten through fifth grade compete in the Junior Olympics in the long jump, 50 yard dash, 1/4 mile run, Frisby toss, and softball throw. We have something like 35 children here today and although I would love a better turnout it's great for the children that are here."
