Moose Lodge organizing Annual Bicycle Poker Run

January 17, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor,

The Pine Island Moose 1954 has been having an Annual Bicycle Poker Run for over 20 years. The Annual Pine Island Moose 1954 Bicycle Poker Run is set for Jan. 27, 2018. The Poker Run starts on the south end of our island at a local restaurant with stops to record players' cards at several restaurants, the American Legion and VFW Posts on our Island.

The event ends at our lodge, high card winners get monetary prizes, and during the afternoon we give away prizes, T-shirts, hats, gift certificates, gift cards, etc. Cards are available at the Moose.

The event starts at 10 a.m. with all cards in at the Moose by 3 p.m. This event helps our island economy, provides the over 200 participants with an enjoyable day, and most of all provides the necessary funding for our Youth Scholarship Program.

The proceeds of this fun event help us provide $1,000 scholarships for our Pine Island seniors. Last year we presented five $1,000 scholarships.

To date we have provided over $55,000 in scholarships to help defray the incidental cost of attending college or vocational training for our graduating seniors. We base these scholarships on need, the students volunteer resume and academic achievements.

Applications for these scholarships are available for our School District's West High Schools.

We are asking for donations of gift cards, appropriate items or a cash donation for this event. Being an Island, many residents appreciate gift cards to main land and Island businesses which can build your clientele.

The board of officers and the event chairman and Lodge Gov. Steve Welch, extend our sincere appreciation for your donation to our Annual Bicycle Poker Run and especially enabling us to present scholarships to deserving graduating seniors on our island.

Tom Akers

Event chairman,
