From the dolphin lights on the Matlacha Bridge to the more than 2,200 luminaries alighting the streets of Matlacha to the live nativity at CW Fudge, Matlacha, was aglow with the Christmas spirit.

"This is our fifth Christmas Eve live nativity," CW Fudge co-owner William Tidball said. "And this is by far the best turnout we've had so far."

There were more Matlacha luminaries than ever before. For the first time luminaries lined both sides of Pine Island Road.

"We have more luminaries than we've ever had," Matlacha resident Dick Maher said. "There are something like 2,200. We spent most of the afternoon getting everything ready for tonight. Santa's 'elves' made this possible by gathering at 2 p.m. to fill the luminary bags with sand and candles. It was a lot of hard work but it really paid off."

CW Fudge featured its live nativity scene with a manger built by CW Fudge co-owner Carlos Gomez.

"We even have a star over the manger," Gomez said.

Christmas carols were sung, hot chocolate was served and lots of holiday flavored fudge and popcorn eaten.

"This is our way of giving back to the local community that supports all of the local merchants of Matlacha and Pine island throughout the year," Tidball said. "It's also an evening of good family fun and a great way to celebrate our 5th anniversary."

The evening is also meant to gather friends who are without family during the holidays to come enjoy time with the CW Fudge family. It was a beautiful night in Matlacha with the luminaries lit throughout the island and the sounds of holiday music playing.
