On Saturday Nov. 11, Gulf Coast Kayak presented the 14th Annual Calusa Blueway Kayak Fishing Tournament in collaboration with Lee County Parks & Recreation and the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling trail.

The event was hosted by the Olde Fish House Marina in Matlacha with the help and generous support of local business sponsors and volunteers such as the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Com-merce, Troop 4 Boy Scouts and Candle-lighters of Southwest Florida.

Judges for this tournament were Chuck and Pat Downs from Walk the Dog Charters, Jim Griffiths from Nautical Mile Magazine and Dave McCarty.

"Over 60 kayak anglers participated in the tournament," Gulf Coast Kayak co-owner Brian Stockbridge said. "Proceeds from the last year's event and again this year were donated to Candlelighters of Southwest Florida."

Candlelighters of Southwest Florida is an independent non-profit (501c3) charity founded by Klair Snellbaker shortly before the loss of her daughter Erin to cancer in 1984.

"Erin was diagnosed with cancer when she was 2 1/2 and died from the disease at just 4 years old," Snellbaker said. "The website has a page entitled 'On Erin's Wings.' and the mission statement of Candlelighters is 'to provide support, education and assistance to families of children with cancer or blood disorders and the professionals who care for them.'"

"Today we presented a Candlelighter Certificate of Appreciation to the Pine Island Elementary School Principal Steven Hook and his staff and students," Strom said. "And Diana Stockbridge and I personally thanked them on their morning news broadcast. Everyone came together to make this a very successful event."
