Under sunny skies and with cool breezes blowing, the Matlacha Hookers hosted its annual fishing tournament to benefit Pine Island Elementary School Sunday morning, Nov. 5. The day started with the honor guard, the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem.

"Of course, the Pine Island Elementary Fishing Tournament is our biggest event and this is our 19th," Hookers Madam President Julia Simpson "Madam DouZie" said. "We start planning for this day about six months ago. It's all about supporting our children's education and our community.

"Hurricane Irma forced a one-month postponement but I'm very happy with the turnout," Simpson said. "It's still early and we have lots of people."

The Matlacha Hookers go above and beyond to make this event special for children, fisherman and the Island Community. To see the joy on our students faces as they land a fish, win a prize or just enjoying making hats and painting shirts makes it all worthwhile. Taking a pie in the face was well worth it. The hooker's support of our kids is special."
