At 11 a.m. Friday, the representatives of the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District gathered at 3500 S.W. Pine Island Road to raise a sign announcing the next phase of the construction of M/PIFCD Station #4.

"The Fire Control District awarded the contract for Station #4 to Vantage Construction Services, LLC, a commercial general contractor and architects Castellanos Tramonte," Fire Chief Ben Mickuleit said. "Castellanos Tramonte Architects will work with the District under a design-build contract for the facility."

The new station is in the early design phase, with preliminary plans to include four enclosed sleeping quarters, a community room, three bathrooms two fire apparatus bays, a kitchen, storage and exercise rooms. The building will be approximately 6,142 square feet with the option for future expansions.

"A unique feature of Station #4 is it will be a drive-through station," Mickuleit said. "Trucks will go in one side and out the other no more backing into the bay.

"We're very excited to make this announcement," Mickuleit said. "This has been in the works for a long time and we're hoping to break ground early next year."
