Pine Island Elementary to hold Veterans Day ceremony

November 1, 2017
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Pine Island Elementary School would like to invite all veterans to attend a special Veterans Day Program at the school on Friday, Nov. 10. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the pavilion. The program will include patriotic music and readings from the students.

"I would like to invite the community to attend this annual event," Monica Renz, 4th grade teacher, said. "We will have special recognitions and special seating for all of our veterans. Coffee will be provided before the program and afterwards the veterans will have lunch in the school cafeteria."

For the past several years, Pine Island Elementary School has invited parents, members of the community and veterans to this special event.

"Students begin working on this event over a month in advance to make sure they are honoring the veterans in the best possible way," Renz said.

Pine Island Elementary has been honoring Pine Island veterans since the first ceremony in November 1997. Tommy Thompson, the principal at the time said, "We want the children to have people and faces to put together with Veterans Day. This way, it becomes more than just a holiday. It has meaning."

"This is also an opportunity for the kids to give back to the island because the community does so much for the school," Renz said, "as well as giving back to the veterans who live on the island. We look forward to honoring our veterans at this event."

Music will be provided by Pine Island Elementary students and a special presentation by the students.
