Jared's Paradise Produce opens

October 25, 2017
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

Fourth generation farmer Jared Kuehnemund and his father, Allan Kuehnemund, recently opened Jared's Paradise Produce - Farm Fresh Fruits and Vegetables at 10731 Stringfellow Road (next to Creative Coast Preschool).

The store will provide fresh in-season fruits and vegetables. Out of season produce will be selected for the best quality and freshness, and whenever available, local produce will come directly from the farms in the area.

The family business of potato farming was started in Michigan by Allan's grandfather and continued by his father Art Kuehnemund. Art relocated to Florida in 1984 where he began selling fresh produce from his pickup truck on Pine Island in 1985 while son Allan and grandson Jared continued potato farming in Michigan.

"Then one day while my dad was operating the stand, a young girl asked him if he needed any help," Allan said. "That girl was Barbie Haszinger and they started a friendship that lasted 20 years. Sometime around 2010, Art gave the St. James City produce stand to Haszinger because of her friendship and loyalty."

In 2005, Allan retired from farming in Michigan and moved to Pine Island to help his father with his produce business. Son Jared continued to work and attend school at Michigan State University.

"In 2011, I opened the produce store at the center in the Subway building," Allan said. "I named it Art's Farm Fresh Produce in honor of my father's 30 years in the produce business. Unfortunately after some health issues, I had to sell the store in 2013."

"At 85 my dad continued working with Barbie going every Wednesday to Immokalee to deliver produce to restaurants and supply the produce stand," Allan said. "This went on until dad passed on May 30, 2017"

The new store is also opened in Art's memory.

"This store is opened by Art's grandson Jared," Al said. "The new store will provide fresh in season fruits and vegetables. Out-of-season produce will be selected for the best quality and freshness and all local produce will come directly from the farms in the area."

Father and son will be working as a team. Al brings his lifelong experience to the business while Jared will run the day to day operations. Jared will also specialize in custom service restaurant delivery with his father.

The Part of Paradise Produce store has been subleased to Chef Neil Dundas, who will be operating a smoothie cafe named Island Way Cafe.

"Island Way Cafe will be specializing in 'good food for a good life'," Allan said. "The cafe will be opened within the next couple of weeks."

Jared's Paradise Produce Farm Fresh Fruits and Vegetables is open Monday Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 239-558-5649.
