Richard (Dick) C May

October 18, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

Richard (Dick) C. May, 80, passed away on October 12 in Lee's Summit Missouri due to complications from a stroke. Born in Topeka KS, Dick lived most of his life in Missouri but spent the last 15 years as a resident of Pine Island Florida. Dick was the only child of Lucille and Conway May.

Dick began his love with food at a young age as his parents ran country clubs and his mother was a fabulous food person. Dick's career in the food industry began as the Manager at the Inn at The Landing. During this time he was also married to Norma Johnson and they had four children. He later went on to be the President of the Specialty Restaurant Division of Gilbert Robinson with 130 restaurants including Houlihan's and Bristols Seafood Grill. Dick actually developed the Houlihan's concept including their name. Dick was a past president of the Missouri Restaurant Association and past Director of the National Restaurant Association, as well as Missouri Restaurateur of the Year. Following his retirement Dick retired first to the Lake of Ozarks then moved to Florida in 1999. After a few years Dick missed interacting with people so he obtained his Coast Guard Captains License and began doing fishing charters as well as officiating at occasional weddings. He was able to also squeeze in publication of three cookbooks during this time frame. Dick was an avid fisherman, hunter and overall outdoorsman. Dick's love for the outdoors was closely paralleled by his love for his family and friends. He was devoted to his children and their loved ones. They will miss his quick wit, creative talents, as well as his fantastic cooking abilities.

Dick is survived by his son, Steve May and his two daughters Connie Buescher and Cynthia May as well as his four grandchildren: Aaron, Ali, Kelsey and Nathan. He is preceded in death by his beloved son Richard C. May Jr. and his parents.
