Larry Scharnberger

October 5, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

Larry Scharnberger, born Laurence Michael Scharnberger, 73, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 3, surrounded by his family after battling complications from a bone marrow stem cell transplant for Leukemia.

He was born September 14, 1944 to Henry and Muriel (Egan) Scharnberger in Flushing, NY. He was raised with his loving sister, Carol (Scharnberger) Denby, in Bayside and Bayville, NY and attended St. Francis Preparatory School. He graduated from Parsons College in Iowa, where he was a proud member of WTBA, the coolest social club on campus, where he earned the nickname "Sean". He enlisted in the US Navy Reserve after college and served until he was injured in a motorcycle accident.

He married Postie Willis in 1972 and they had a daughter, Grace (Scharnberger) Benson. He moved to Southern California in 1974 to attend San Fernando Valley Law School. He passed the bar and, shortly thereafter, became a partner at Diamond & Scharnberger, Inc. in Woodland Hills, CA, practicing civil litigation. He lived in Hidden Hills for many years where he was an avid tennis player. He and Postie divorced in 1992.

Larry continued practicing law and went on many sailing adventures in the South Pacific. He met the love of his life, Carolyn Ledsinger in 1996, on Valentines Day. They got married July 7, 2000 at the Westlake Yacht Club in Westlake Village, and his new family included Carolyns daughter, Kristina (Howell) Kidd. They lived in Westlake Village, CA until 2005 when they moved to Cape Coral, FL to enjoy boating in warmer waters and Gulf Coast sunsets.

Larry joined the Matlacha Mariners on Pine Island, FL a local non-profit group raising money for families and charities in need, and served as President for three years. He also served as Vice President of the Pine Island Community Church, a place he loved and appreciated for its unending support, especially during his illness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Scharnberger, his sister, Carol Denby and her husband John Denby, his children; Grace Benson and her husband Dana Benson, Kristina Kidd and her husband Brandon Kidd, his grandchildren Beau Benson, and Isaac and Bishop Kidd, and his niece and nephews; Laura Denby, Jack Denby, and Sterling Dixon.

His family is grateful for the superior care he was given at Moffitt Cancer Research Hospital, his wonderful doctor, Dr. Claudio Anasetti, and the entire Bone Marrow Transplant Team who embraced Larry, his wife Carolyn, and family, as their own.

He was an exceptional son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, integrity and patience, his gentle smile, his love of the Rolling Stones, collectible Porsches, travelling, fishing, skiing, boating, playing tennis, and his fantastic sense of humor, even to the very end.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Pine Island, FL sometime in November.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Larrys name to:
