Discover Parks and Recreation Day: City sends an invite: Come out and play

July 13, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

Learn about the recreational opportunities available in Cape Coral during an event Saturday.

Hosted by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, Discover Parks and Recreation Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The entire event is free to the public.

"It's kind of giving the residents and visitors what's out there in our park system currently in Cape Coral," Kerry Runyon, parks superintendent for the Parks and Recreation Department, said.

"We try to do something every July in relation to National Park and Recreation Month," she said.

In 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association declared that July is National Park and Recreation Month. This marks the 32nd anniversary that the nation is celebrating the month.

At Discover Parks and Recreation Day, visitors can learn about the facilities, divisions and programs within the department, as well as enjoy several demonstrations and a range of activities for all.

There will be representatives from the city's environmental recreational programs, senior centers, Four Freedoms Park, youth center, Coral Oaks Golf Course, arts studio, Special Populations and more.

"There'll be several activities," Runyon said.

There will be a photo booth, ice cream, touch tanks, scavenger hunt and live animals.

"There'll be kids' arts and crafts," she said.

The main stage in the yacht club ballroom will feature dancing, live entertainment and more.

Prize drawings will be held throughout the day.

"There's going to be a lot of drawings and prizes," Runyon said.

They include Sun Splash Family Waterpark tickets, free golf at Coral Oaks Golf Course, Yacht Club pool and Eagle Skate Park passes, tickets to Coconut Festival, a remote-controlled boat and more.

Food and drink vendors will be on hand.

Runyon noted that for the first time this year, the event will be spread out between the Tony Rotino Senior Center, Cape Coral Yacht Club Ballroom, tennis courts and Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach.

"They're spreading it out so people have more room. Last year it was pretty packed," she said.

"It was very successful," Runyon added.

Officials previously reported that a couple hundred people typically attend.

Runyon encouraged the public to stop by and check it out.

"If you're a new citizen to Cape Coral or if you haven't had the opportunity to check out the city's park system, this will be kind of a one-stop shop to see where you'd like to go and recreate within your own city," she said.
