Beacon of HOPE Wellness Committee: Islanders helping islanders

July 12, 2017
By NANCY BUTHMAN , Pine Island Eagle

If you moved to Pine Island since 2004, you probably think the Beacon has been here forever. It hasn't. It was started after Hurricane Charley to help the Islanders deal with the devastation left in the storm's wake. It has continued to grow and help people in more ways all the time.

The Wellness Com-mittee was started last August. It's purpose is to "inform, advocate and facilitate" the health and wellness of the people of Pine Island. This means developing a greater awareness of the needs on the Island and finding short- and long-term solutions to these problems. We're going through an information gathering period now - developing information about what types of services various groups offer. We're finding that there are a tremendous number of services available, more than most of us realized. We will partner with these groups so we're not duplicating services.

Another goal of the committee is to hold health-related classes and activities and to increase participation in them. Overall we hope to increase the awareness of just how important it is to take care of your health so everyone on the Island has the opportunity to live as full and happy a life as possible.

Islanders helping islanders works both ways. We need you to help us in a number of ways. First of all, we need you to call us at the Beacon if you know a neighbor or a friend who is in need and either doesn't know what to do or has given up. This is so very important. Second, we would love to have your input. If you have ideas about other needs that should be addressed or if you have suggestions for how we can better communicate our activities, please let us know. And, of course, if you want to get personally involved there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference.

Help us so we may better help you. It really is Islanders helping Islanders.

You may reach us at wellbeacon@gmail.com or 239-283-5123 or online at beaconofhopepineisland.com.

The Beacon is located at 5090 Doug Taylor Circle, St. James City.
