Summer activities at St. James City Civic Association

May 24, 2017
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor:

Spring is here and the dog days of summer are just around the corner. Many of our friends from the northern climes have departed and it seems as though our island has returned to its quiet, laid-back, hammock sleeping ways. That being said, if you are looking for something to do and need some people time, come see us at the St. James Civic Association located in St. James City at 4th Avenue and Lemon Street.

On the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m., we offer an exciting and very interactive book club. This month's selection is "The Life We Bury" by Allen Eskens. On the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m., our Photo Club meets. No need to be a professional photographer, just bring your camera and enjoy planned photo outings in and around Pine Island.

If you enjoy bridge, come see us on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Each Wednesday, this fun group of folks calling themselves The Slambidders, meets to have a friendly bidding war and all around good fun.

If cards are not your cup of tea then how about Mah Jong? The Mah Jong Club meets every Thursday at 1 p.m. This is a tile game dating back to the 1880s, but don't let that dissuade you, especially if you have never played before. This group of islanders will gladly take you under their wings and tutor you.

The St. James City Civic Association activities are open to all who wish to participate. In most cases there is a modest fee of $2 for members and $4 for non-members. We welcome all newcomers and invite you to become a member of our association. The yearly membership fee is $20.

More activities will start up beginning in October. Join us for exercise and yoga classes, or painting and line dancing. There is an excellent crafting group and a fun ping pong group.

If you would like to see us begin a new activity, please let us know. A new kayaking club is about to be formed so if you are interested in getting on the water with us please e-mail me at

We look forward to seeing you.
