Turn signal blinkers can help prevent an accident

To the editor:

Beautiful Southwest Florida attracts new residents and tourists from all over the USA but with this blend of people in our communities come different driving habits and skills.

Coming from Minnesota where we have had to deal with snow, ice and other inclement factors on the road, I am shocked at the frequency of accidents here compared to Minnesota.

Many things contribute to this high accident rate. However, I would like to point out one easy habit for us to embrace to help reduce accidents and that is the "use of the blinker." I find about 1 in 7 drivers never use a blinker to indicate a lane change or turn. I have even seen our own Highway Patrol not using their blinker. I checked Florida law (316.155) and the use of a blinker is still required in Florida. If this simple habit could be restored, we might reduce our accident rate and even save a life.

As we age and our population continues to grow, we need to be attentive to the rules of the road and save the emotional and physical trauma of an auto accident.
