To the editor:
The Beacon of HOPE's English for Speakers of Other Languages program needs volunteer English tutors starting in May, to join us through the summer season or long-term. Our snowbird tutors are leaving us for a while and our student population is growing.
We meet 7-8 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Bokeelia Firehouse on Stringfellow Road and Thursday evenings 7-8 at the Church of God the Prophecy a little further north on Stringfellow (across from Raymary Grill).
We will have two short training sessions in early May and on-going mentoring from senior tutors. Most of our students are Spanish-speaking but no foreign language skills or tutoring experience are needed, just a desire to work with adults who want to learn English. Most students have only basic reading and writing skills, even in their own language.
If you want to volunteer or want to learn more about tutoring in the ESOL program, please call or email Linda Potter, 609-947-3633 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
