Once again, cars were backed up on Pine Island Road all the way to Burnt Store Road for the Pine Island Art Association's 45th annual art show and sale this weekend. The show ran Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pine Island Art Association president and co-chair of the event, Vicky Werner, was pleased with the turnout.
"Even this early we've had lots of people through the gallery," Werner said. "This is our 45th annual Pine Island art show and sale and every year it seems to get bigger and better."
Patty Sole's 1st Place Acrylic - Novel Idea - Medical.
The Pine Island Art Association has more than 200 members and at least 70 artists on display. There were hundreds of paintings displayed from "mini" paintings to wall-size paintings, landscapes, seascapes, birds, fish, flowers in all painting mediums: watercolors, acrylics, oils and pastels. The "mini" paintings were 3 inches by 4 inches and sold for just $10 each.
Jack Lovell is a member of P.I.A.A. and paints in watercolors.
"I started painting in 1992 when my daughter said, 'Dad, you're driving Mom nuts,' so she sent me a bunch of watercolors and acrylics and suggested I find a place to take lessons," Lovell said. "That was the start and I went up to Punta Gorda to learn from Helen Pierce. Then when Helen came to Pine Island, I followed here and have been here ever since."
"This painting is titled '5 O'clock Somewhere'," Lovell said. "My wife and I were in Ocean City, Maryland, for our 65th wedding anniversary when I took this photograph. Part of the original photo was actually cut off so I had to use my imagination to fill in the painting a bit.
"When we're traveling if I see something that I like, I snap a picture and then if I decide it would make a good painting, I add a few things to the original image," Lovelle said. "This won first prize for watercolor so I guess the judges thought it had something."
Patty Sole won 1st Place Acrylic titled "Novel Idea-Medical'" that shows a stack of medical books with a stethoscope, glasses and a medical bag.
"I did a series of paintings with this theme," Sole said. "The first one was of my jar of paint brushes with a stack of not so old books with a squashed tube of paint at the top. I decided that was boring so I decided to use old books, because I like the detail. The second one was 'Novel Idea-Literature' with glasses, a cup of tea and old books. The third was 'Novel Idea - Music' with a violin and sheet music and this one was a bigger challenge and is called 'Novel Idea Medical'. I'm thrilled this won first place acrylic."
Jenna and Brian Steele arrived with their house guests.
"We were looking for something to bring our house guests to and thought this would be great," Jenna Steele said. "I didn't realize how big this would be it will probably take us all morning to see everything. This a great art show and we'll probably have lunch here on the island if it's not too crowded."
The Pine Island Art Association started 45 years ago when a small group of people wanted the company of other artists while they painted. For many years, the Association rented space at the Matlacha Civic Center one morning a week. The association now has a beautiful building and an excellent staff who teach classes 5 days a week,
Entertainment was provided by Fish 'n Tips. It was such a beautiful day the band set up their instruments on the lawn outside. "It's a great location for the band," Phyllis Dowd said.
