El Pollo Rico opens on Pine Island

Official grand opening planned for September

Pine Island's newest restaurant, El Pollo Rico, opened March 26.

"We opened to a 'soft opening' because we wanted to iron out everything," owner Mike Miceli said. "There's always a few things that don't go perfectly and I wanted time to make the necessary corrections."

El Pollo Rico is located at the Center, at 5508 Avenue A, Bokeelia.

"I've always enjoyed cooking from the time I was a kid," Miceli said. "I learned in the family businesses. My mother and father owned a mom-and-pop, family-run bakery for almost 40 years in Venezuela and also Connecticut. I learned to bake bread and cakes from my dad."

Everything is made from scratch at El Pollo Rico, even the breads.

"I'm here 7 a.m. every day to make breads, desserts, salsas and sauces," Miceli said. "The food at El Pollo Rico is a combination of American, Tropical Caribbean with some Spanish Mexican and even Italian influences."

Dinner choices include Carne Asada, marinated grilled flank steak topped with onions and peppers; 14 oz pork steak marinated and grilled with a side of mango salsa; and moo pulled pork. Think of the moo pulled pork as Chef Mike's take on pulled pork and it goes nicely with white rice and beans.

Desserts include key lime pie, mango key lime pie, Mike's Orange Crush cake, Oreo cake, tiramisu, tropical carrot cake and tres leeches cake.

A recent review on Trip Advisor said, "Thrilled to have El Pollo Rico on the Island. The food is quality and delicious. Mike is a talented chef, you can never go wrong ordering the daily special. Clam chowder is one of my favorite lunch time offerings, and I usually get the fried green tomatoes to go with it. There is something for everyone at this unique restaurant. I could eat here every day of the week and not get tired of it!"

"When we designed the restaurant, I wanted an open kitchen so our customers could see everything," Miceli said. "El Pollo Rico is casual dining with an island feel. We're in the planning of our grand opening probably in September. The chamber will be here and we'll cut the ribbon and kick off the new season. Watch the Eagle for the announcement."
