April 13, 2016
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Jane Lopez, a representative of Beltone Hearing of Cape Coral and Heather Golden, an outreach representative with CapTel Caption Telephones, have scheduled their next monthly hearing aid service at the Pine Island VFW on Tuesday, April 19. The session will include a free CapTel captioned telephone presentation.

"This is an ongoing monthly hearing aid service for any brand hearing aid and hearing user," Lopez said. "The service includes cleaning, checking performance and providing counseling regarding the use of your hearing aids."

The captioned telephone demonstration is performed by Golden.

"We provide free 'captioning' telephones for individuals with hearing loss," Golden said. "I would compare it to closed caption television except it's on the telephone. The accuracy is 97 to 98 percent because there is a live captionist that will 'catch' and fix errors before they reach the person on the CapTel phone. We do this because sometimes people are talking with their doctors and accuracy is very important."

The telephones are free with certification from a hearing related professional or a doctor.

The captioning service is also free.

"It's paid for by the federal government under the Americans with Disabilities Act," Golden said. "You have to have Internet and landline phone service and then we do the installation, hook it up and show you how to use it.
