Bert’s Mermaid Parade raises funds for FOH

February 24, 2016
By ED FRANKS ( , Pine Island Eagle

Bert's Bar and Seafood Grill held its sixth annual Pirate Fest & Pirates Ball Feb. 12. The event was kicked off with the Parade of Mermaids at 6 p.m.

The Parade of Mermaids raised money for Pine Island's From Our Hearts organization.

"Our Mermaid Parade was very successful this year," organizer Deb Cole said. "Our mermaids worked very hard and went out and raised money by having sponsors. It was a huge group effort and many of the members of From Our Hearts helped out. When it was all over I'm very proud to say collectively we raised $1,070 for From Our Hearts."

"The Parade of Mermaids has occurred for the last four years," Deb Cole, manager of Bert's Pine Bay Gallery, said. "The Parade of Mermaids is actually in its 8th year. The first year was in 2007 featuring visiting mermaid Kate Dale, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade 'Best Mermaid.' The following year, Pine Bay Gallery hosted a former Wiki Wachee mermaid Jo DeShay of St. James City. Jo brought photos from her years of swimming, including movie shots with Esther Williams of Olympic medal fame. Every year this event gets bigger and better."

Bert's Bar and Seafood Grill is at 4271 Pine Island Road in Matlacha. For additional information about Bert's call 239-282-3232 or visit
