GPICA addresses several topics at meeting

The Greater Pine Island Community Association held its monthly meeting Tuesday night at the Elks Club.

GPICA president Roger Wood opened the meeting by introducing Cesar Sanchez, chairman of the Pine Island Flag Committee.

"We have 18 entries on display for you to vote on," Sanchez said. "I will hand out ballots and after the meeting you can vote for your favorite flag. These flag entries are also on display at the Pine Island Eagle and ballots are available there for your vote. The last day to vote is Nov. 30.

Ken Hines from F.I.S.H. (Friendly Islanders Sending Help) then addressed the group.

"I am a volunteer and on the board for F.I.S.H.," Hines said. "F.I.S.H. has been on the island for over 25 years now. F.I.S.H. provides assistance for islanders in need. We are desperately low on volunteers for phones and transportation. Transportation is helping an islander get to the Cape or Ft. Myers one day a week usually for a medical appointment. Phone duty is also a one day a week thing. It's only a matter of checking the messages left at F.I.S.H. several times during the day."

In 2014, FISH responded to 1,648 telephone calls and assisted 193 families/individuals with rent, utility bills or medical expenses for more than $49,000. In addition, F.I.S.H. had a record 218 children in its Christmas Basket Brigade.

Phil Buchanan later outlined the topics addressed by the revised Pine Island Plan: elimination of the 910 rule, building height limitation, the right to keep commercial fishing gear at home, TDR's (Transfer Development Rights), 2.7 acre density count and open space rules.
