The Calusa Land Trust's major fund-raiser for the year - the 17th Annual Great Calusa Rubber Duck Race - was held Saturday, March 7, at Woody's Waterside Restaurant in St. James City.

The weather was Pine Island perfect as hundreds of supporters embellished in the games, raffles, food/beverages, auctions and camaraderie. By late afternoon the event culminated with the release into Monroe Canal of 3,000 prepared, but sometimes unruly, rubber ducks as they raced to the finish line in hopes of capturing one of 20 prizes for their cheering "owners."

This year's grand prize winner (a day excursion of the barrier islands in Pine Island Sound aboard Capt. Chuck Koucky's Alondra) was won by Gene Feliciano of North Fort Myers with Duck Number 1913.

All told over $27,000 was raised, in order to fund CLT's all-volunteer operations. Mark your calendars for the 18th Annual Rubber Duck Race on March 5, 2016.

The Calusa Land Trust is Pine Island's land conservancy whose mission includes the acquisition, preservation and protection of environmentally and historically sensitive lands within this area.
